5 tips to start monetizing your video content

Starting to charge for your video content can feel like a big step for many. The questions can be many, and perhaps you recognize yourself in one of the following:

  • How should I price my videos?
  • What makes a video "good enough" to charge for it?
  • How do I get the video out to potential customers?

Fortunately, you are not alone in these thoughts. In this article, we will give you 5 concrete tips on how to think, and what to do, to get started with getting paid for your video content.

1. Your work is worth paying for

It's easy to get caught up in the idea that online video is only used as marketing. But the fact is that the willingness to pay is there, and so are the customers. And charging for video is just as natural as charging for any product or service.

2. “Educational” videos sell best

Surveys conducted by VOYD as well as YouTube and Patreon show the same results. Willingness to pay is highest for video content that educates. It absolutely does not have to be extensive training, but simple tips or courses are enough.

3. Content comes before length and quality

You don't have to produce your content in a studio or with a professional film crew, nor does it have to be long. A study conducted by VOYD showed that willingness to pay is high even for shorter videos, although of course you may need to adjust the pricing slightly for these.

4. Try different formats and prices

Don't be afraid to experiment until you find the right format and price for your particular content. Compare with what others charge for similar content and consider established consumption patterns.

If your content is entertainment, it can be good to price based on rental film or cinema. If it is a more expensive production, the price range 10-30 EUR is ok. If it is a less expensive production, the price range SEK 4-10 EUR is reasonable.

If your content is educational and unique, you can charge more, especially if it's aimed at businesses. SEK 30-60 EUR and SEK 60-150 EUR are common ranges at VOYD. Then there is content that is aimed at companies and that costs over 3000 EUR.

Talk to your followers and customers. Ask the question what content they would like to pay for and what they would be willing to pay. Feel free to provide ready-made options and use the channels you have access to.

5. Think long-term and be patient

Building a successful business for your video content is a long-term effort. It may take a couple of videos and some time before you get it right on what kind of content your customers want to buy, and how you should price it. The most important thing is that you get started and that you constantly have a dialogue with your customers and followers. Experiment to see what works, adjust and do what works again.
